NOBAB Iceland
NOBAB Iceland or Umhyggja (meaning care in Icelandic) has evolved in a different direction compared to the other member organisations of NOBAB. The organisation is an umbrella organisation housing both care givers and care recievers. At present (2011) 19 parent organisations are under it´s umbrella as well as individual helthcare workers. One half of the boardmembers are parents and the other half consist healthcare workers. All having the same goal:
The increased quality of the life of the chroncally ill or disabled child and it´s loved ones in Iceland.
NOBAB Iceland or Umhyggja has been that kind of organisation for the last 15 years and during those years the organsation has prosphered and has become one of the leading NGO´s of Iceland concerning chronically ill or disabled children.
Umhgyggja runs it own office with employees. There children and their families can seek advice or help when they find their situation difficult or they experience that they are not getting the support and service which they are intitled to. The organisation offers them guidance through the "system" for eksample the healthcare system or the schoolsystem or whatever their need may be.
The organisation is fortunte enough to be able to give families in financial troubles because of the childs illness financial support. The organisation also runs two vacation houses specially designed for chronically ill or disabled children which it hires out for a minmal fee. The organisation is also a consultant on regular basis for state or muncipal authorities in matters concerning the situation of sick children.
